Dr. Atom Sarkar MD, PhD, FAANS

Director, Adult and Pediatric Stereotactic, Functional and Epilepsy Surgery, Global Neurosciences Institute, LLC

Dr. Atom Sarkar is a physician scientist actively engaged in international research for the past forty years. He is a neurosurgeon and full Professor, at Drexel University’s College of Medicine, where he is a member of the Department of Neurosurgery. In addition to operating, his neuroscience investigations at Drexel are conducted through joint appointments in the Department of Pharmacology & Physiology and the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems. It is this combination of brain surgeon/neuroscientist which places him at the forefront of translational research with direct applications towards practical problems. Dr. Sarkar has been at the forefront of brain machine interfacing technologies for the past 25 years and has led toward acclaim for innovating models of the human brain – from ‘brain on a Chip” to current models of culturing brain tissue long-term, allowing for unique investigations otherwise not possible. In addition, such an intimacy with the human central nervous system has led to a clinical practice of neuromodulation, arguably the most exciting field in medicine today. Perhaps Dr. Sarkar’s most unique endeavor in the past 10 years melds consciousness, memory, creativity, and behavior. This has led him to lectures around the world at luxury destinations such as restaurants, hotels, wineries, etc., where his views are keenly sought after.
